growing pain

solo-filmmaker / editor

Filmed 2024, as part of my Filmmaking BA Hons.

'Growing Pain' is an interview led documentary exploring into the filmmakers (Charlotte Richards) childhood migraines revolving around the stress and anxiety that comes along with growing up. Charlotte speaks with a medical professional who has studied migraines for several years and has written several books on the subject, and several others including her own mother in a search to understand the migraines that dictated her life when she was 8-13 years old.

This film uses filmed and archival footage to transform the narrative into a visual experience often showcasing how a migraine can look and feel with her use of sound editing. The interviews with herself feel directly spoken to the audience she speaks about her pain with such candour its almost refreshing.

This film shows the overarching feeling of hopelessness in Chronic pain, 'Growing Pain' looks at the childhood of Charlotte Richards and the good life that she had despite chronic migraines and brings a flicker of hope to the film discussing how they have shaped her later life.
